Ljubljana – A guide to Slovenia’s fairytale capital

    September 9, 2023 / 1 Comment

Imagine you are looking for a beautiful European city break with cobbled streets and lots of cafes. Tree-lined streets and a river flanked by beautifully architectured bridges are overlooked by a fairytale castle sitting high on a hill. Food and drink aren’t too expensive. The city also is uncrowded, spotlessly clean and easy to get around. It exists, and it is Slovenia’s capital. Welcome to Ljubljana. Disclosure: Some of the links in this post are affiliate links. Lake Bled, Slovenia – the perfect mini break

    December 18, 2022 / 2 Comments

If you’ve seen a picture of Lake Bled, the image has probably stuck in your mind. An impossibly turquoise lake surrounded by mountains and lush forests with a little island that is home to a pretty white church. It is the kind of place that you think you’ll get there and it could not be possibly as lovely as the photos. But it is, a charming fairytale setting. Lake Bled is located in the northern part of Slovenia, just a stone’s throw away from the Austrian border, and you’ll see some similarities, from the picturesque mountains to the cute Alpine-style buildings dotting the landscape. Disclosure: Some of the links in…

A Day Visiting Mdina, Malta’s Silent City

    October 23, 2019 / 6 Comments

On our second morning in Valletta, we decided to take a half-day trip to Mdina, catching the 20 minute bus ride to near the city gates after breakfast. Mdina was once the capital of Malta but after the siege of Malta, the capital moved to the three cities. In the years after, it became a ghost town, earning it the nickname the ‘silent city’. But its grand ambience has remained; Malta’s noble families have long called Mdina home, earning it another nickname of the noble city. You might spot Mdina in the distance while you travel through the rest of Malta, lit up at night by a soft lamp light…

Oxford is one of the most visited cities in the UK, attracting over 7 million visitors each year. It needs little introduction, being home to the most famous university in the world. Exploring Oxford is easy to do in one day and you should have time to see many of the city’s highlights. As I mentioned recently in my post about great day trips from London, Oxford is easy to reach from London, making a great day out. Great (and easy) Day Trips from London

    May 14, 2019 / 8 Comments

London is full of an endless list of things to do, but did you know there’s also a lot of great day trips from London? “When a man is tired of London, he is tired of life,” Samuel Johnson once said, and after seven years of living and working in this vibrant city, I have to agree. Even I have not discovered a fraction of what it has to offer. But whether you have an extended stay and are needing some fresh air, prefer smaller places to the city, or maybe you are a Londoner yourself looking for something new to do – sometimes you need a day trip from…
